Henle Latin, First Year

Book cover: 'Henle Latin, First Year'
Author(s):
Robert J. Henle, S.J.

Henle's First Year Latin is the book I studied as a homeschooled high schooler under the care of a great old Jesuit priest who left his position as a Latin and Greek professor at the all-boys Jesuit high school for a few hours each week to teach Latin to a small group of homeschoolers.

Latin is Fun, Book 1

Book cover: 'Latin is Fun, Book 1'
Author(s):
John C. Traupman, Ph.D.

I've been teaching Latin to two small classes in our weekly homeschool co-op for the past year using Latin is Fun as the primary text. The younger students were 9-11 yrs. old and the older students were ages 12-14. The text is a large workbook with a lot of cartoon-like illustrations and dialogue boxes to make the text engaging and intended to help students connect a Latin word directly with an idea rather than to the English word.

Power-Glide Adventure Tools for Building Language Vocabulary

Book cover: 'Power-Glide Adventure Tools for Building Language Vocabulary: Noun Pack Flash Cards with Audio'

This elegantly simple resource provides an introduction to nouns in six different languages in a way accessible to young children. (The point isn't necessarily to overwhelm them with all six languages at once - you pick your language of interest or let them play around and see what they like.) The front of each large glossy card has a simple, child-like illustration of the object or a symbol representing the noun.

Sewing with Saint Anne

Book cover: 'Sewing with Saint Anne: A Sewing Book for Catholic Girls'
Author(s):
Alice M. Cantrell

Today's young women can benefit in many ways from the lessons learned whilst sewing. Among them are the genuine self-esteem gained by completing a challenging task, patience both with oneself and with the project at hand, and quiet perseverance with a task that takes longer than expected. Sewing with Saint Anne is a delightful book that organizes and simplifies the steps needed to learn how to sew. The majority of the projects would appeal to a young lady from about age six onward if she had help, or from about age ten with just a little help.

Building the Family Cookbook

Book cover: 'Building the Family Cookbook'
Author(s):
Suzanne Fowler

Building the Family Cookbook by Suzanne Fowler is not your typical cookbook. Although the layout is similar to most church cookbooks with a comb binding that allows it to lay flat for reading, the contents include much more than recipes. The opening pages include such Catholic topics as "A Recipe for a Happy Life," based on scripture, "The Importance of the Family", based on the words of John Paul II, the value of a family eating meals together, some advice from other moms on motherhood, practical ideas for building a Catholic family, and more.

Declaration Statesmanship

Book cover: 'Declaration Statesmanship: A Course in American Government'
Author(s):
Dr. Richard Ferrier
Dr. Andrew Seeley

Since the last review of this work, the name has changed, and it now comes with a teacher's manual and book of readings. It was formerly called America's Declaration Principles in Thought and Action. The main text has not changed, but is now printed in an attractive 8 X 11 comb-bound book.

Original Review:

A Book of Sanctity

Book cover: 'A Book of Sanctity'

A Book of Sanctity is a newly printed collection of stories gathered from numerous out-of-print Catholic reading books. These 27 selections center around the theme of sanctity and include Bible stories, stories of the saints, and stories of families. Most pages include a simple black-and-white illustration that enhances the interest of the story without distracting a young reader's attention.
