First Communion Days

Book cover: 'First Communion Days'

This book consists of twelve true stories of children preparing for and receiving their first Holy Communion.The stories are sweet and inspiring and present many fine examples of real devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and how real children themselves made their hearts ready for Jesus. Some of the stories are of "little saints" who always strove to do what was right, while others involve children who struggled to overcome tempers, selfishness and other temptations. Two particularly touching stories are about children who received their first communion on their death bed.

CHC Lesson Plans: Second Grade

I continue to be impressed with each new grade level of the Catholic Heritage Curricula lesson plans. I could not imagine a more family-friendly format and the details are so impressive. On each two-page spread (which covers one week) there is a little "ideas" section which includes suggestions for celebrating feast days, an art masterpiece to display each month, and other things which help tie things together nicely. I love the beautiful quotes, simple games and other tidbits scattered throughout the lesson plans.

The First Grade Lesson Plans are similar in format to the Kindergarten Lesson Plans except that they offer a lot more as your child becomes more immersed in school. Now there are four pages dedicated to each week of lessons. the first two pages provide a parent's preparation check list, weekly goals, overviews of week's assignments and much more. The layout is both beautiful and easy-to-use. The final two pages for the week are a planner-format lessons chart with ample room around the edges for notes, additions, changes, etc.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families

Author(s):
Stephen Covey

This is a great book! Although Stephen Covey is a Mormon, it is amazing how Catholic his underlying principles are. I was particularly struck by this because I happened to be reading it alongside The World's First Love by Bishop Fulton Sheen, which is about Our Lady. Both authors discussed the true meaning of freedom at length and their principles and conclusions were remarkably similar. The book covers seven major ideas, which when incorporated into our lives, can have a profound effect on our ability to accomplish goals and deal well with other people.

Reclaiming America's Children

Book cover: 'Reclaiming America's Children: Raising and Educating Morally Healthy Kids'
Author(s):
Michelle Willis

This is essentially a brief training manual written to help parents successfully raise children in difficult times. It appears to be written especially for caring parents whose children are attending public or private schools. Although it is not explicitly Catholic in content, the teachings and basic principles presented are essentially Catholic (and the author is Catholic).

The Tightwad Gazzette

Book cover: 'The Tightwad Gazzette'
Author(s):
Amy Dacyczyn

This book is available in either three individual volumes or a newer paperback compilation. The books are collections of individual Tightwad Gazzettes, a newsletter filled with thoughts and ideas about saving money, getting out of debt, living on one income, etc. Some of the ideas seem a little extreme, but Mrs. Daczycyn explains that she has had people in very desperate situations call her for advice. She feels that it's worthwhile to include all of these ideas as they may be helpful to some.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

Author(s):
Stephen Covey

Having a healthy skepticism of "self-help" books caused me to be lacking in enthusiasm when this book was recommended to me by my older brother. He had been studying it with some friends at work and had high praise for its content. I think I would never have picked it up except that I happened to be at my brother's house while he and my mom read a chapter aloud. Wow. It wasn't anything like what I had expected and turned out to be quite good.

Garden of Virtues: Planting Seeds of Goodness

Book cover: 'Garden of Virtues: Planting Seeds of Goodness'
Author(s):
C. Keffler
R. Donnelli

This is a friendly and lovely little book on practicing the virtues in the midst of family life. Although it is clear that at least one of the authors is Catholic, the book is written on a very practical level and in such a way that it would be appealing to any family attempting to live a peaceful and virtuous life (particularly in the midst of raising children).
